Why finishing a last one for the road could lead to a DUI

On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2025 | DUI Defense

People don’t have to intentionally drink and drive or suffer from alcoholism to end up accused of drunk driving. Small choices can lead to driving under the influence (DUI) charges. The way people drink and how long they wait before driving can both influence their risk of an impairment-related traffic stop.

Many people slowly sip a drink or two while out for dinner or socializing with friends. However, when it is almost time to leave or the establishment is about to close, people may drink much more rapidly. They may try to finish their drink in a few minutes, which might actually increase their risk of a DUI charge. A last one for the road, especially when consumed as quickly as possible, can leave someone unfit to drive.

Digesting alcohol takes time

Alcohol begins to affect the person consuming it within a matter of minutes. The more that people consume in a short amount of time, the greater the potential for feelings of impairment. Someone who finishes three-quarters of a mixed drink in a few minutes might feel as though they can drive safely.

However, their degree of impairment may slowly increase as time passes. By the time a police officer pulls them over, they could be over the legal limit and may display signs of intoxication. Waiting 20 minutes or more after finishing a drink is one way to effectively gauge impairment.

Those accused of DUI offenses may need help understanding why they failed tests and how to handle their charges. Defending against DUI accusations may be possible if motorists have proper support and understand the law.
