3 ways college students can protect each other from DUIs

For many young adults, college is a time of independence and new experiences, which sometimes includes exposure to alcohol. While experimenting with social activities can feel like a rite of passage, the risks of drinking and driving are significant.

Fortunately, students can play a key role in helping to ensure their peers stay safe. By looking out for each other and adopting responsible habits, students can reduce the chances of a night out ending in tragedy.

1. Create a designated driver system

One of the most effective ways students can help protect each other from DUIs is by creating a designated driver system. Before heading out, a group can decide who will abstain from alcohol for the evening and take on the responsibility of driving. This system works best when rotated so no one feels burdened every time.

2. Use ridesharing and campus transportation options

Technology and campus resources make it easier than ever to avoid drinking and driving. Students can encourage their peers to use ridesharing apps, which are often available in most college towns. Many universities also provide late-night shuttle services that can be a safe and affordable option. Friends can remind each other to budget a small amount of money for rides before going out.

3. Look out for each other during social events

Students can help protect each other by paying attention to signs that someone may have had too much to drink and stepping in before they attempt to drive. This may mean:

  • Taking away car keys
  • Calling a ride
  • Offering a place to sleep for the night

Building a culture where students look out for one another at parties and gatherings helps ensure safer outcomes for everyone involved.

College life brings freedom and fun, but it also comes with responsibilities. Preventing DUIs should be a collective effort, with students playing an active role in protecting one another. In the event a student gets into DUI trouble, they shouldn’t hesitate to involve their parents to access dedicated legal guidance while navigating the legal system.
